Hello, I am Dongwook Song

A PhD candidate in the school of communication at Simon Fraser University. My primary theoretical tools are derived from media and cultural studies. In South Korea, I have conducted research on the uncertain and precarious circumstances faced by Korean young adults, Cheng-Nyeon [청년], by employing various qualitative research methods, including ethnographic approach, media representation and discourse analysis. My research interests broadly include youth, popular, and digital culture, with specific topics such as the relationship between structure and agency, the (re)articulation of cultural studies with political economy, the financialization of daily life, and the social reproduction crisis in the South Korean context.
Currently, I am writing my doctoral dissertation, which aims to examine the emergence and development of stock investor subjectivities among young adults in South Korea during and after the COVID era. The dissertation investigates the intricate processes through which financialization infiltrates the everyday lives of Korean young adults by examining the role of media, including apps, and their lived experiences and media use in relation to stock investment.
